Backup Solutions From Cobalt Creek

Backup Solutions from
Cobalt Creekspacer image Having a backup solution to protect the vital files on your computer is one of the most important aspects of being a responsible computer user. Vital files include documents that you create as well as other unique files such as images, your email in box. Backups are particularly important for business documents, research projects or business proposals that can represent weeks or months of work, and that can be nearly impossible to recreate. Some users may also want to back up critical application and system files, though this can be cumbersome and time consuming, and in many cases, not really necessary.

Backup solutions can take many different forms, depending on your individual needs and the types of hardware you are currently using. There are a number of backup solutions available to you, with prices to fit all budgets. Don't wait until you have a catastrophic disk drive failure to realize the importance of backing up your data. Let Cobalt Creek design a customized backup solution specifically for you.

This page lists some backup solutions available for Windows-based desktop and notebook computers, listed by type of user: individual; small business; or enterprise. Brief descriptions of each option are included on this page.

Pros Cons and Cost of Backup Solutions

Individual User
Internal or external media.

  • Pros: Relatively easy to implement and inexpensive if you have the necessary hardware.
  • Cons: Relies on the computer user to remember to do the backup. It also relies on the user to store a backup copy off-site. Storage capacity is limited by type of medium.
  • How Much?:Relatively inexpensive depending on the type of media present.
Small Business/Home Office
Small business and home office solutions include networked backup-and-restore to a centralized unit, SCSI tape drives, plug-n-play drives, or a stand alone backup server. These types of backup solutions typically support from 10-100 or more users.
  • Pros: Centrally administered. Provides increased reliability and redundancy.
  • Cons: Client-side configuration can be moderately difficult. Set-up and troubleshooting may require the assistance of a system administrator or computer consultant.
  • How Much?: Relatively inexpensive when the scale of the operation is taken into consideration.
Enterprise Solutions
Participation is by subscription to a centralized, networked backup service provided by a third party.
  • Pros: Central administration. Provides secure, off-site, redundant storage. Using a third-party service provides a variety of advanced features.
  • Cons: Client-side configuration can be difficult. Set-up and troubleshooting may require the assistance of a system administrator or computer consultant. Others have access to your data.
  • How Much?: It normally ranges from $8.25/month per user to $15.00/month per user.
